About

Alan Lim, photographerBefore Alan Lim knew what photography was, he was self introduced to a twin-lens reflex camera which he found at home. Although he did not know what it was but for a six year old boy who loved to draw it was a unique and exciting toy.

Alan entered the professional photography world right after graduated with a degree in photography from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale  in 1995, he was soon attracted to the fast pace of the news room. He joined The Straits Times (Singapore’s main English- language broadsheet) in 1997. During his time there, he produced countless catchy cover pages, edgy fashion spreads, arresting celebrity portraits, and powerful documentary photos. His work has won him many local and international awards, including Monochrome AwardsLucie Awards- International Photographer of the Year, Nikon Photojournalism Awards, and WAN-IFRA. Over the next 12 years, he became the paper’s most sought-after feature photographer, and was promoted to senior executive photographer at the age of 30.

In 2009, as passionate as ever about photography and visual communication, Alan left The Straits Times and became a freelance commercial photographer to expand his knowledge by challenging himself in what he does best. In a few months time, one of Alan’s highest achievements in his career arrived when he was awarded by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to conceptualize a series of his portrait. And just a few short years before while Alan was serving The Straits Times, he was invited to photograph Prime Minister Lee’s father, Lee Kuan Yew for his biography.

In December 2010, Alan founded the School of Photography Singapore. As a photographer mentor/instructor, Alan’s vision is to broaden the photography art culture by sharing his invaluable experience and knowledge with all photography lovers, both amateur and professional. At the opening of the school, Alan was appointed as Nikon Professional Photographer.

In 2014, Alan was appointed by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore(IPOS) as the IP Creative Partner in Photography to broaden the awareness of copyright protection in photography.
